Common Jaw Growth Problems

The relationship of the upper and lower jaw is divided into three main categories called Class I, Class II, and Class III.

CLASS I

The upper and lower jaw line up properly. This is an ideal relationship.

CLASS II

The upper jaw is too far forward or the lower jaw is too far back.

CLASS III

The upper jaw is too far back or the lower jaw is too far forward.

Children with Class II and Class III jaw growth problems should be treated with two phase orthodontic treatment. Early treatment can avoid the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later on such as jaw surgery and extractions.
